RESPONDING TO THE CRISIS IN HAITI WITH CHARITY AND JUSTICE

FEATURES

Friends of EFJ:

The earthquake and its continuing aftermath in Haiti demand an immediate response by people of good will.  To this end, I have listed three reputable organizations that I recommend you contribute to.  These organizations are already on the ground in Haiti and have been doing work in the country for years. In the coming days, I will also be reaching out to leaders of the Haitian-American community in Asbury Park, NJ to get their suggestions on how we can best help the people on the ground.

Along with the time-sensitive humanitarian aid we can and should provide, now may also be a time for citizens of the United States to learn more about Haiti, particularly about our government’s consistent interference with and exploitation of this poor nation for the benefit of transnational corporations.  U.S. foreign economic and military policy continues to be one of the main contributors to the ongoing systemic poverty in Haiti.  It is this ongoing poverty that has left Haiti so ill-prepared to deal with any crisis, let alone a crisis on the scale of which they are now facing.

I hope you share some of your financial resources with the aid agencies listed below AND that you will share some of your time to learn more about the economic and political history of U.S. – Haiti relations.

Peace,
